SUMMARY:Push Start Beginner Clinic
DESCRIPTION:This clinic is for skaters with little to no experience riding a skateboard will have an opportunity to learn the basics of skateboarding and safety from skilled, local skaters. Our philosophy is you must learn to walk before you can run, so this clinic is focussed on the fundamentals, not tricks. New skaters will be taught basic maneuvering skills including balance, pushing, stopping and turning. We will also talk about how to skate (and hang out) at the skatepark safely. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in our clinics to extend the lessons at home.\nLocation: Lauridsen Skatepark (Near the restrooms)\nCheck-in begins at 9 AM\nSkill Level: Beginner\nSkills Taught: balance, pushing, stopping, and turning.\nCost: $40 per skater\nREGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS\nAdvance registration is required.\nAll skaters will be required to sign a liability waiver and a standard photo and video release form allowing Skate DSM to use photos and video taken at the clinic for promotional purposes. A parent or guardian must be present at the clinic for any skater under age 12.\nHELMETS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS IN THIS CLINIC\nWe strongly recommend investing in a quality skateboard for your child. Longboards, penny boards, and cruisers can make it difficult for your child to learn. We recommend you invest in a skateboard that is a “popsicle” shape. Subsect Skate Shop is a partner with Skate DSM, they have quality skateboards and safety gear available for purchase. They are located at 309 E. Walnut St. There are other Skate Shops in the region that can also provide quality equipment.\nAlthough they seem like a good deal, mass-produced skateboards from department stores will make it harder for your child to roll, gain speed, and turn. They can also add to the risk of falls due to an inability to properly steer or roll. We HIGHLY recommend investing in a higher quality board.\nHelmets should fit snugly on the head, without flopping around.\nTHE BRADY MARTENS MEMORIAL SKATEBOARDING SCHOLARSHIP\nThis scholarship was created to remember and honor Brady by providing skateboarding clinics and equipment for younger generations. Learn more about Brady, the scholarship, and apply.\n
